Conversation

June /July garden

 I am having a conversation via e mail with a friend who loves the challenge of painting.  We have been discussing whether we need to replicate in some way what we are looking at or translate it. I think that we are leaning towards the latter but we are not there yet. I go back and forth: that bothers me but at the moment I feel unable to separate the need to stand and stare from that of needing to work from what I am looking at. It works best when I can turn off the outside and turn on the inside but can't always do it. I am thinking that my friend is finding it difficult too. We are both trying. This is where she is now.

I thought that I would make something like the small paintings in the previous post but either I couldn't sustain the method over a large surface or, it simply became defeated by the size. End of summer.1. A post in three parts.

                                                        late garden.  oil on canvas. 170x150cm I am reading The Sound of Sleat The life of an artist, John Schueler , edited by Magda Salveson and Diane Cousineau. It is one of those books which sits almost but not quite unnoticed on ones bookshelves until some moment prompts us to open it and begin to read. The painting here, which predates beginning The Sound of Sleat by some weeks and has no connection with Schueler's own work never the less does seem to herald a shift once more in my approach to my painting. Although I am close up again to the surface and work close up so that I am not aware of the rectangle it still has a recessional space, still invites participation in the perceived experience of a garden.  Except for the ones that inhabit my memory.  For many years I was a teacher of sorts. I worked in art departments. I met many young people and some of them became friends. One never knows how these things work, how interactions can have such lasting effects. A chance meeting is all it takes. I made a friend in Andy McIntyre, during our time together at Madeley Court School in Telford. He came to class, he came to tea. He had a lot on his plate and he wasn't the only one. Somewhere in the maelstrom he found a quiet but exciting space, a vision of possibilities. I recognised his rush to devour ideas and make progress. He was one of those for whom school can be daunting, almost not fit for purpose. I think art gave him purpose and he became a teacher who gave that gift to others.  I have no idea why, so far from home, he decided not to go on with his life. I can see him still, hear him still.
