I thought that I would make something like the small paintings in the previous post but either I couldn't sustain the method over a large surface or, it simply became defeated by the size. Or maybe I become lost and in finding my way to some sort of resolution, the journey changed direction.  I was in conversation with a friend who weaves: we talked about maintaining direction, the integrity of the vision, the fact that if in his case it all goes awry he must tear it down and start again where as I, can just slap on some more paint or scrape it off. Spirit of Place

 Susan Owens makes the case via writers and visual artists for the re-evaluation of landscape over time in her book Spirit of Place, published by Thames and Hudson.I have been reading this during afternoons working on the painting, which, whilst it is in progress and has changed a lot , has been made close up during periods of steppingjutside and just walking about in amongst the space that is part of the garden. Musings and six new pieces

 Painting: I can think of no better reason to keep on keeping on than to accept that it is all rather pointless and one might as well do something. And that's alright: we accept that that is the way things are and there lies freedom. One can step back and see that it is an indulgence, a solitary activity that in itself will change nothing and yet, and yet, although it is a simple thing to imagine not doing, to imagine an empty studio, a studio where I no longer am, it draws me to it again and again and I succumb to its entreaties willingly, eagerly anticipating the heartbreak; the pleasure; the frustration of never being good enough, to balance desire with acceptance.  As the man said: We none of us are going to get out of this alive.
